Your Lymphatic System
(and why it is more important than you might think)
While
the circulatory system is an extensive network of vessels for transporting
nutrition and oxygen-rich blood to the cells, the lymphatic system is an equally
extensive network designed to transport toxin and other cellular waste away from
the cells.
Unlike the circulatory system which has the heart to circulate the blood, the
lymphatic system must rely on a system of vessel contractions, one-way valves
and external vessel compressions from normal body movements to keep fluids
moving. Lymphatic fluid consisting of plasma, toxins and cellular waste are
passively moved upwards from the body to the neck. Along the way, wastes and
toxins are removed from the lymphatic fluid by lymph nodes before cleaned plasma
is dumped back into the blood stream at the neck.
Without a dedicated pump, the lymphatic system is more susceptible to areas of
fluid stagnation, congestion or blockages. If lymphatic movement is restricted,
excess waste builds up in tissues causing swelling, fatigue and increased risk
of infection. Lymphatic systems compromised by injury, surgery or other trauma
are more susceptible to chronic fluid stagnation (Lymphedema).
Lymphatic Massage
Lymphatic
massage can play a role in maintaining a healthy immune system by clearing
blockages and assisting with proper lymphatic drainage. Also known as “Lymphatic
Drainage Therapy”, lymphatic massage is a hands-on technique using a light touch
that clients find very pleasurable and deeply relaxing. During a massage,
trained therapists can detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality
of lymphatic flow. From there they can use their hands to map the vessels to
assess the direction of lymphatic circulation, areas of stagnation, and the best
alternative pathways for draining lymph and other body fluids. In essence,
lymphatic therapy helps circulate body fluids, stimulate functioning of the
immune system, and balance the autonomic nervous system.
